Capitol Project is an extra-curricular activity for 9, 10th, and 11th
grade students. Sponsored by the Iowa Secretary of State’s Office, Capitol Project provides an opportunity for approximately
125 students from all across Iowa
to interact with Iowa’s top elected officials, and
to role-play members of the state legislature by creating, debating and passing model legislation.
Participants travel to Des Moines
for a three day activity, normally in late March or early April. The activity
is competitive. Applicants must also complete formal applications and supply resumes.
NU High's program is normally announced early in the early spring semester. Applicants
usually have two-three weeks to create their application packages. Winning applicants are typically notified early by spring
break.
There is a cost
involved for each student. In recent years the total cost of the program
has been around $100. This includes all materials, chaperonage, all meals,
and two nights lodging in Des Moines.
The NUHS Activities Department
will contribute $20 toward each student’s participation up to a maximum of $120 for six students.
